Spiritual practice does not make perfect

Ramana Maharshi has counselled: apply effort until it happens spontaneously. If it doesn’t just “happen” then one might want to do something about that. Methods like this don’t produce a result so much as they engage the mind and heart so that they dont keep creating problems (such as the sense of being trapped)

When Buddhist teachers (the ones I have worked with) use a term like “cultivate” this or that they dont mean bring something like compassion or awareness into being, rather they mean stop interfering.

If you dont need to use a “method” then thats damn fine but for myself I find that I have so much subconscious conditioning which obscures and distorts that I find using certain methods to be of great value.

This method of turning back onto what is aware of the object for me is to suddenly become aware of the negative space around a condition that it then releases of its own accord. When I put all my focus on the condition then I get involved in trying to manipulate the condition or object and negotiating with it (such as “i feel trapped, how can i get out if this trap” or even “how can i learn to accept this trap”) turning back is my way of doing nothing about the trap at all (it is a dream)

For me method is stretching the canvas and getting the paints and tools ready. Method does not PRODUCE the art.

Blood, bone and gut

Many say that the Ultimate cannot be described with words. Obviously “the Ultimate” cannot be “known” by “thought”. That is kindergarten spirituality. This is a subtle attempt to be secure in the idea of knowing that it cannot be known. You can’t fake out life through clever verbal postures. That is a devil’s game. Life is more plain, more spacious, and more uncertain than that.

It is more like this: “What am I doing right now?” Watch for any clinging for security. We are drawn to what is pleasant and move away from what is unpleasant. Watch that movement, watch the consequences, and you will know for real with blood, bone and gut.

About being topical: Malin Akerman and Darvocet

Well, I usually prefer just being, however, I have been asked to be topical today. So…

The number one google search at this time is malin akerman. Very good. What does this mean though?

Malin Akerman is an “actress star”. We know that she

  • is Swedish
  • won the Ford supermodel search of Canada when she was just 17-years old
  • modeled
  • is a singer
  • is married to an Italian musician

I only know these things because I was being topical. But there are so many other things to be topical about.

There is the matter of Darvocet and Darvon and the controversy swirling around these painkillers which can have a negative impact on the heart. That is an issue more critical to public health. Malin Akerman is lovely but, to my mind, getting bad meds off the shelf and addressing alleged loss of life due to these meds is a priority.

If you look at pictures of Malin Akerman regularly, then doctors and public health professionals are advising a gradual withdrawal from viewing her. People should switch to looking at other pictures.

Peace.

Some mutterings…

What can I say? Outcomes?

Never mind.

Flavour and embellish the rich stew of life as if you were another I T !

Marvels pile upon marvels,
The saints reveal that,
The Essences bewilder you,
Your throat wants freedom.
